Imagine meeting the needs of large, demanding retailers and more than 10,000 stores worldwide with a paper-based warehouse management system (WMS). That’s how HMS Manufacturing was operating just a few years ago. Now, thanks to AccellosOne WMS, HMS has organized its warehouse, streamlined operations and improved order accuracy. What’s more, it did while seamlessly integrating with Microsoft Dynamics GP, its enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.

Organizing the Organizers

Headquartered in Troy, Michigan, HMS designs, manufactures and markets well-known, name brand home organizing products ranging from laundry baskets and hampers to wastebaskets, drawer organizers and storage containers.

Inaccurate inventory counts. Because such a large amount of inventory is difficult to track via paper, workers didn’t always know the exact quantities of items, this meant important customer orders often were delayed or left unfilled.

Inability to prioritize. “Some orders would come down early, yet they wouldn’t ship for a week,” explains Patrick. “Other orders would come down late, but they’d be scheduled to ship the next day.” Without the ability to capture and share information, orders were processed “first in, first out,” often resulting in last-minute scrambling, errors and even missed shipments.

From chaos to order
With these pain points top of mind, it came as no surprise to Patrick that his first major assignment was to work with the company’s IT manager to recommend a WMS. “Our priority was finding a solution that would work with our ERP, Microsoft Dynamics GP,” explains Patrick. “At the time, a lot of software solutions didn’t integrate with it.”

Rethinking EDI with AccellosOne
AccellosOne WMS isn’t the only Accellos solution HMS depends upon. The company also relies on AccellosOne EDI for Microsoft Dynamics GP, an electronic data interchange (EDI) solution that sends out advanced shipping notices (ASNs) and sets up deliveries.

The right decision drives results and delivers ROI
What do Patrick and Rick advise for other companies considering solutions such as AccellosOne WMS, EDI and vShip? Here are three things they recommend keeping in mind:

  • Look for a track record of success. HMS chose Accellos because of its experience. “The company not only had a great product, it had proven logistics experience and experience integrating its product with Microsoft Dynamics GP, which was our No. 1 priority,” says Patrick.
  • Time spent up front pays off down the road. “I consider our implementation of AccellosOne WMS hugely successful,” says Patrick. “One reason is because of how closely Accellos worked with us in the beginning.” That time and effort paid off when the software went live, and it continues to pay off today.
  • Make sure you have ongoing support. No matter how good the software, you will experience bumps so choose a vendor that truly desires to be a long-term business partner. “Accellos is committed to us,” says Rick. “When we need support, we just open a ticket and Accellos goes to work.”
